In-between – Microcosmo y Macrocosmo, 2018

The exhibition is based on intense artistic research carried out in the scientific fields of astronomy and microbiology. This project has its origin in the tender of the Cultura Resident program and has been developed at the Museu de Belles Arts de Castelló to create an exhibition on display at the Centre del Carme in Valencia as well as at the Casa de la Cultura in Castellón. At the Centre del Carme, an artistic-experimental laboratory gets simulated that analyses the connections between the inner world and the phenomena of the universe. Different scales, from the exhibition hall as a macrocosmic element to small laboratory supplies such as test tubes and Petri dishes, play a fundamental role in the installation where the viewer is positioned halfway between the opposite poles of microcosm and macrocosm like an In-between filter. In Knie’s works, the use of textile material, like the carrier material as well as the hand and machine embroideries, which in some works are combined with painting, forms the basis for her multidisciplinary transformations that infuse her artistic productions with tactile and sensory qualities, extending the purely visual. In a second „satellite exhibition“ at the Casa de la Cultura, Knie presents Estudios y Modelos Cósmicos in which she mainly explores objects that can be found at the limits of the solar system through a fictitious creation of new dwarf planets. Here too, the large is mirrored in the small: a series of magnified photographs of small machine embroideries that generate new contexts and give scientific meaning to them.
