Bio-embroidery – Studies of hybrid models

The project aims to obtain new visual information and knowledge about cultivating sprouts, roots or other filamentous plants on synthetic, machine-embroidered tissues. It draws on the collections of vascular plants and algae of the Herbarium of the University of Granada, mainly to aesthetically investigate (textile) structures, colours and the biodiversity of plants. Through artistic experiments and studies of hybrid models of synthetic and natural „yarns“, the project addresses environmental issues regarding a more sustainable use of textiles. Can a textile fabric grow? This interest derives primarily from the scientific discipline of biomimicry, which aims to imitate biological systems in the creative process and learn from nature. Herein lies an enormous potential to promote understanding of science through art and to stimulate a creative dialogue between artists and scientists.

The project was funded by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Granada (Facultad de Bellas Artes, Universidad de Granada) as part of the festival FACBA21.
