Zu Tisch, bitte! (herpes simplex virus), 2012 | hand embroidery on cloth napkin, photography

Ancient viruses, 2012

Ancient viruses is a little collection of my first virus-inspired artworks. I embroidered by hand some electron microscopic images of common viruses, that I found on the internet in a classical cross-stitch on tablecloths and cloth napkins. On a bigger scale, I transformed these embroideries into paintings.

In the exhibition Zu Tisch, bitte! at Raum für Kunst in Paderborn, the viewer´s expectations are misled; instead of getting invited to a laid table, the display is more set on like an at-home laboratory. An interplay of micro and macro scales provides an artistic examination view on “popular” viruses, such as the herpes simplex virus, embroidered in classical cross stitch or extended in paintings and drawings.
