Fragments and Fruits from Cosmic Garden, 2026
The series Fragments and Fruits from Cosmic Garden evolves from the individual work From Cosmic Garden (2024), which depicts a plant grown in perfect symmetry. Its starting point is the speculative idea of a plant that develops a form distinct from terrestrial growth patterns under the conditions of zero gravity in outer space.
The symmetry of this utopian plant provides the formal structure for the series. It begins with two tentacle-like, asymmetrical embroidered works, each composed of four individual elements. Through horizontal and vertical mirroring, these elements generate sixteen further ornamental plant forms. Fragmentation and reconfiguration thus give rise to an open system of possible manifestations – a speculative herbarium situated between organic growth and geometric order.
Measuring 20 × 20 cm, the textile works evoke ceramic tiles featuring abstracted floral motifs, such as those found in traditional Mediterranean design. In the wall installation, they are arranged freely on a stained fabric panel, remembering the Mediterranean wall bases.
The fabric comes from Alexandra Knie’s former studio and was restored after the flood of October 2024. Despite repeated washing, the traces of mud remain, permanently embedded in the fibres as a brown pigment. A tension emerges between ornamental order and material unpredictability, in which nature, speculation and memory overlap.
The complete work was presented in this wall installation in Knie’s solo exhibition Floral Speculations at G.B. Kunst Trier, Germany.
